Are grad students really low paid?

A typical assistantship in a US university grad program pays in the neighborhood of about $1500 a month. Anyone can see that this number is much too low for the time and effort a grad student invests in the research lab or in teaching and would be hardly enough to pull through his/her long years in grad school. Are the grant agencies and universities oblivious to this? No. What we most often miss out is that along with this stipend, the student's tuition is also taken care of. So the actual cost to the professor/department who offers the assistantship, is the stipend (1500*12) + 24 credits a year tuition cost. This is a pretty significant number. In public schools, the tuition could hover around 20K a year. Needless to say, private schools are much more expensive. Once a grad student is done with the course requirement set by the department within a year or two into the program, he/she usually ends up registering for 9 research credits just to stay a full time student. Now, the university typically arrives at a particular cost of X dollars per credit based on various factors that include infrastructure, pay to the faculty, facilities, maintanence, etc.  This number, makes perfect sense for someone who enrolls for a course that is offered by the university. Why then should a research credit also cost the same?

Typically, when a professor gets a grant for pursuing a problem, he has to pay a fraction of that grant to the university that lets him use their resources for conducting research. He then possibly employs a graduate student by offering him an assistantship from that grant money. Towards this assistantship, the professor again ends up paying for the X research credits the student registers for to the university. Isnt this redundant? What is the university's cost towards offering a research credit to a graduate student? Whatever the expense, its already paid for by the fraction that it gets when the grant is awarded to its faculty.

Why cant the university then charge lesser for its research credits? Just by reducing the cost of the research credit, universities can turn this poor grad student pay scale significantly. The saved money could be diverted into a higher stipend (thereby attracting more students into grad school, eventually increasing the quality of the student pool) or if that is unacceptable (should a section of the academic community decides to keep lab rats poor), pump it back into the project (the research needs money anyway). In any case, its a  win-win situation.

Science and society

Dr.Humphrey's quote in class today:

In most countries' legal systems (actually he said US, but I think its safe to extrapolate to others too), you are innocent unless proven guilty.

In science however, you are guilty unless you can prove your innocence.

What this means is, when you are discovering something unseen by others, inventing something not done before, there are so many unknown errors/deviations that can creep in, that unless you acknowledge their presence through quantification or take care of them in your design, you are doing bad science.

As an afterthought I wonder if there can really be anything called bad science. It can be science or it can be trash.  If its bad science, it wont be long before its proven its trash or its swept happily away under carpet and forgotten forever.

Morning Saaga!

Its one thing to be woken up by mechanical alarm clock sounds in the morning, and another to be woken up by your wife's apa-shruthi singing of the sa-ri-ga-mas at the top of her voice accompanied by constant 10 second even higher pitched corrections from the computer (thanks to skype and internet, her guru lives in the far away land of carnatic music :) )!
With the time difference of 10 and half hours between India and our little apartment, the only feasible class timings so far have been worked out to be the golden time of 5:30 to 6:30 AM !!
The thing is, when you wake up listening to a tune, you end  up humming it the entire day.... I wouldnt mind humming a good geetham... but sa-sa ri-ri ga-ga ma-ma pa-pa??!!
And how come only sa-ri-ga-mas? Well she has some 'Janta'-attachment with the Janta-varasas... every time she comes to this lesson, something happens and the guru changes! i can only hope and pray she quickly gets past this stage and get into atleast good singing of geethas soon.
Any carnatic music teachers out there, please respond :)

Nenu "Adiga"na?!!

Aravind Adiga is a deranged man. He needs serious psychiatric help. Read... (actually dont read) his books to see what I mean. The fellow portrays people in such shades of black and white, with frothing evil... actually on an after thought... there are no characters with any shades of white.. the good people are losers... the murderers and perverts are characters shaped by circumstances... and these are the "hereos" from him??!
He portrays the country with such seething black.. he shows a virtual breakdown of a system and the timelines in the stories are as recent as the early 2000s... i really dont think its that bad... in fact, it cannot be that bad in the third worldest of the third world countries.... leave alone india... he brings in this typical attitude that in India anything... ANYTHING can be done with some money arranged... and that we are a nation teeming with abject poverty..... I agree we are a poor nation.. i even agree that corruption exists.... but come on.... theres more to the country than just that... in his wiki entry, theres a statement that says:
"...it is important that writers like me try to highlight the brutal injustices of society (Indian). That's what I'm trying to do -- it is not an attack on the country, it's about the greater process of self-examination."
to borrow a line from his own novel.... "WHAT A FUCKING JOKE"... first i think hes a very ameatur writer... there are factual fallacies... black bags become brown by the end of the chapters...
this guy is a joke... and giving him a booker prize for the white tiger is a even greater joke...his second book is aptly name between the assasins... assasination of any quality reading I am sure...
so disappointing to have read his book in the kindle (courtesy TAMU "educational" media services :))

Somethings wrong somewhere

Theres a lot of wrong going on around.... and theres a lot of good too.... and thats what makes it a world.... it takes all kinds alright....but these are some of things that I am coming across more frequently off late... and something about them is not right...
1) Attitudes of teachers of high school in Andhra Pradesh
My brother is now going through what I had been through a decade ago.... only the magnitude of the pressure has since increased by the multitude...the uncertainty of what the future holds, the fear of the failure at the most critical juncture of life, the pressures of a nerve wrecking 3 hours that changes our lives forever...oh the kids of 11th/12th have already enough to worry about... and obviously the higher the stakes, the higher the parents would be ready to invest in.... naturally turning the whole thing into a humongous economic potential.. and even more naturally tapped into by the managements of "semi" residential schools, tutorial colleges, tutoring/coaching centers, and the more "rank" fetching junior colleges....
firstly, its wrong to make a business out of education... i very strongly believe certain institutions of the society are more than a business... they are more a social responsibility than an industry...and thats why the governments should intervene and regulate.... healthcare and education should and will always top that list....
Knowing our politicians who bring in socialism only when it directly can help them raise their own personal fortunes... and knowing even too well, the most "retired" politicians run the education business, it only makes sense to see that the junior college and the professional colleges have been left unregulated for too long.....
while the kind of money charged is one thing, what is even more saddening to see is that during the most impressionable years, these teens are day in and out told that wouldnt succeed at that entrance exams for the professional courses at the first shot!!! why??? just so they can come back to the college for a "long" term "tutoring" that would then "equip" them to crack the entrance the second time..... CRAZY!.... first they cram very very high concepts of biology and calculus into two years of the 11 and the 12th.... thanks to our vedic genes, most of us do manage to get it in time and be ready for it atleast 4 months ahead of the exams..... the following months is just pure revision and tremendous practise with mock tests that train us into handling almost any kind of questions....after all this, tell me how can anyone go back to the learning the same thing all over for another year? of what good is that teaching? and of what good are these teachers who instead of instilling courage and confidence to face these exams, tell us that we are bound to fail and we should already consider joining them again for a long term training?
pathetic.... i only hope this is the nadir and the next generation quickly starts climbing up the quality curve...
2) Desis and quickstar, amway.....
Ever since I have been in the US, I come across these people at a regular frequency... only the language and tone is different based on what year I have been in the US... first year (and mostly unfunded year) "I have a project I could use some help on"... second/third and subsequent years.... "what do you do on the weekends? how about some little fun work that would get you some extra buck?"...
theres nothing wrong in amassing personal wealth... each one to his own..... but seriously dude.... why are you frigging using the pretext of friendship??!! why are guys bringing this to a point that no one can ever get friendly to new people without them getting alarmed about another quickstar crack?? its now come to this....a compliment from a random desi at the mall? back off... quickstar guy.... random scraps on orkut introducing as some mutual friend's friend? BACK OFF!!!! AMWAY TO NOWAY!!! it just drives you nuts.... why cant these quick star people understand they LOSE MORE FRIENDS THAN THEY EVER MAKE? (do they ever make any friends?)... why cant these crazy nuts understand that MOST people wouldnt want their frigging amway soaps.... we have our walmart where we can choose what we want!!!! its like they are out on a hunt and unassuming desis like us are their prey??!!! somethings wrong somewhere....

Books are like balloons

"Books are like balloons.... They take me from one world to another"

Aparna Akka, gave me this bookmark, long ago when i was a kid still considering Enid Blytons and hardy boys as "big" novels that take a lot of time to read....... then, the bookmark was interesting... with this nice snoopy picture.... colourful... and I cherished it coz it came from aparna akka...

Today, it brings in a whole new meaning.... true...... books indeed take us away into a new world... a world created by its author... so wonderfully etched... where your senses actually sense what the author intends to....you go on to "experience" new situations you have never been.... like in the Riot by Shashi Tharoor, you can feel the claustrophobia, the mob feeling....as also the undulating love towards a partner, and the guilt of adultry, all or most of which you probably will never be in throughout a normal life time.

Another such book, that takes us into a whole new world, that I had the good fortune of reading, is Life of Pi, by Yann Martel.

It describes the ordeal of a teenager boy who survives a trans-pacific crossing in a lifeboat, that he has to share with a fully grown bengal tiger. Now, though I have been raised in coastal cities, for most part of my life, I dont know what it feels like to be in deep sea, till I read this book that is...... its fantastic narration of the dangers and the sights of the great ocean.... man, I almost got sea-sick.... interestingly, what I imagined to be, might nowhere be close to what it really feels like... but then, like the book said, isnt reality a transformation of what we imagine to be?

What separates a book from a movie, is that you are taken through a story at a pace that is set by the director of the movie... while the book, i can end up reading a single line for an hour, savoring every single word of the sentence, building my own perspective with what the words describe, and still go along with the pace intended.....

books, sigh..... its very difficult not to fall in love with them, once you start taking to them.....

Encounters with the third kind

All of us would have had some sort of encounter with eunuchs... and for most, the experience wouldnt have been pleasant.... So, when Mahesh Dattani, wrote this article in The week, I felt the fellow was not making much sense.

Here is my mail to him :

Hey,

I just read your article in The Week and I found it interesting. For someone whos travelled four years between chennai and mumbai in a train, and for someone whos lived in mumbai subsequently for 2 more years, I can more than recognise the familiar tap. I am afraid of eunuchs. And I am ready to accept that. But this arguement of completeness, I am not ready to buy. Apparently, most of the articles/books/documentaries I read/saw about them, talk about how good they are as human beings and all that. Maybe true. In fact, lets accept that it is true. That eunuchs are a beautiful set of people and wonderful human beings. But for the common man walking on the road, all he needs is his amount of "free" space to carry on doing what he intends to do without a hindrance. Now, I dont know if it comes because they are ostracized, or because we fear them, but lets face it, the eunuchs do take advantage of this.

To me, as a man on the road, isnt it disgusting to see someone touching me supposedly provocatively, sexually, putting up a nauseating performance in full view of the rest of the public, just because I deny turning in my hard earned money when asked for? Dont you think its them trying to cash this disgust, more than my feeling of disgust in the first place thats pushed them towards begging?

Think about this. A handicapped person with non-working limbs, on a wheelchair has the respect/sympathy of the people in any public transport or building. If the same person resorts to begging? He still gets the money based on sympathy. Now, does that mean that the sympathy of the public has pushed him towards an easier resort to make money? No. Its just a choice and set of circumstances that drove him/her to doing it.... but the society does accept either form of it. It takes time, but I think the society would eventually start accepting these non-conventional people into the mainstream. A few hundred years back, being handicapped meant being cut off from an active earning life forever. But now, there is some ray of hope. Handicapped people do find jobs, do try and live self sufficiently.Cant the same be true with eunuchs too? Why do they have to resign themselves to their fate, and continue capitalizing the fear/disgust of more normal people?

Its this apect about them that I think most people hate. Its for this nauseating behaviour that eunuchs as a class of people put up at the drop of the hat, thats feared. I dont think its my subconsciousness acknowledgment of the fact that they are far more complete than me. If they are more complete, so be it. So what? Does that make any difference to way I lead my life or the way they lead theirs? At the end of the day, no matter how social an animal a man is, isnt he driven by whether his needs are taken care of or not? In more civilised societies of today, I am sure they would be accepted too. All it takes for them would be to adhere to the simple norms of the society. Is that difficult?

Kaushik Lakkaraju

And he responded:

dear Kaushik
thank you for your well thought out rationale on why people hate eunuchs. I am in no way condoning the hostility or attention grabbing tactics of the eunuchs. Consider this, if you had no access to public transport, government hospitals, cemeteries etc. If people looked at you with disgust simply because of your appearance, how civilised or polite would you be? I know a lot of people including the government who would give jobs to handicapped people but do you know of anyone who would give a job to a eunuch?
I appreciate the eunuchs because they do not want our sympathy. How easy it would be for them to play the victim and live off the few rupees that buy us our 'feel good' moments. I too have had unpleasant experiences with eunuchs (jsut as I have had unpleasant experiences with some men, women, Hindus, christians etc) but when I am polite and look them in the eye and request them to leave me alone, they have been very obliging.
Anyway, I really appreciate your response. I like the closure. Yes, in more civilised societies they would be accepted. I would like to change the last line a bit and say 'All it takes for US is to adhere to simple norms of society. Is that difficult?"
warm regards, and may you have many hassle free train journeys!

Mahesh

A Brief Encounter with History

On the 15th April 2007, Stephen Hawking came to our school to give a talk. What we saw at the Rudder Hall was phenomenal.... Very rarely do people in science get this of celebrity like recognition. In fact, the disparate nature of the crowd gathered to listen to him speak, made me forget that I was there to listen to a science talk. It was more like as if it was a rock show, and all of us were eagerly awaiting for the celebrity to perform.

So stephen hawking cant twitch. Most part of the visible anatomy is paralyzed. Strict instructions for no flash photography later made sense when we understood that the computer that speaks for him, run on the only moving parts of his body- the eye balls moving up/down, left/right.

About the talk. Such kind of celebrated professors talk are usually kept on a generic level. To address such a big audience with differing science knowledge is a challenge by itself. And must say, stephen hawking carried it off with ease. Some say, its a pre-recorded lecture. And that stephen hawking was just there posing. I like to believe that he really talked. Interspersed with humour, his talk about earth, gravitation, newton did make sense. Must confess, that I did feel sleepy in between, maybe due to the monotony of listening to a bonzi-buddy'sh voice.

Interestingly, the talk ended before people realized that it did. So the man was saying something, which I dont know how many along with me didnt follow. He says something.. plays a slide.. and says thank you... and suddenly a man appears on stage and drives the wheelchair away :)

Certainly a brief encounter with a brief ending :)

Except expect

A friend had been trying to 'tag' me off late... a strange phenomenon that has caught up with the blogger's world... where people are supposed to come up with confessions/things others dont know about them......whats strange is..... arent most blogs already that? people blogging things they are not comfortable 'talking' about for various reasons....? then why this "tagging" business all of a sudden? Anyway, before you start thinking if this is my tag... relax... this is something more sillier :)

So, I was talkin to another close friend about relationships... what makes/breaks them... and it made sense to think that most of the times its just the failure of the other person to keep with the expectations that throws things out of gear....while sometimes we fail to understand what we are to expect from the other person... most of the times its probably our inability to express it thats the cause of all problems... second time... if u think this is getting serious... relax... am coming to the point shortly..... and if u are wondering why am i over-talking :)..... comes from a blog of a friend i read recently... the fellow never shuts up... n so does his blog :)

Apparently, one relation that certainly can never be affected by this is the one between parents and their kids... there really cant be any parents who got the kids everything they asked for....and their really cant be kids who are blissfully happy about everything the parents get.

So this is it.... can you come up with something that you always wanted.... but you never got it from your parents....? Who knows, we might get extremely, improbably lucky and our folks might get to read this and decide to finally give it to us ? :) Or better, some altruistic friend trying to figure what to give for the next birthday, reads this.... :)

Mine is this remote controlled car. The whizzing sound making 4 wheels of plastic that consumes enormous amount of battery and goes around the whole house much to the disgust of more saner adults? I could never get my parents to get me that gizmo. And man.... am I in awe with it. Somehow, when I really did start making money and I could buy a really classy version of it, I could never get myself to buy it. I still want mommy and daddy to buy it for me :) So mom ( err..... am not sure if she would read this :) but then.... what the hell.... this is a wishlist and we are optimists) you know what to get me for the next birthday..... ( under another highly improbable event that you dont know me and are still reading this, am a fully grown adult male of 25 years and mentally healthy :) )

So go ahead.... leave those comments with all those wish lists and lets see whos the wackiest.....
( ok... so this idea of getting you to write here is not original and I borrowed it from dilbert blog.... so what? do you want your remote controlled car or no :P)

Cinema theestaru anta cinema

Spring break this time was not a break....in fact.....when i got back to books.....felt that was break.....:)

There is this roomie of mine whos as cranky as i m if not more...... both of us have this childish line of thought.......both of us had this cranky idea of making a movie........:)

so when there was a call from the Houston Telugu Association to participate in their Ugadi celebrations this year, Satish (another guy whos probably not as cranky as we are...) and Soma had this idea to make a movie and play it there...... So what happens when 3 mad men get together? passions match and each give in 150% of their complete attention to it....

man.....must agree it was exhilarating......the whole experience....planning the shoots, deciding the screenplay.....writing dialogues....acting.... making others act..... planning on lighting.....deciding camera angles...:) and for soma n satish...apart from all this, writing lyrics, singing, climbing trees, falling into swimming pools, editing, compiling......

of all things.. it was sleepless nights that was the best........soma's style of functioning is like rahman's.....he starts all his creative work in the mostly unearthly times.....and it was fun.....probably for the whole of spring break and a week before and after that..... soma and satish would have spent about a maximum of 10 hours sleeping....

and finally, when the movie was being played in the houston hall, this was our state.....no sleep for more than 30 hours before the point this photo was taken.....soma no longer cares whats happening, satish trying desperately to stay as hero as he can get ..... n me? continue to be the fool that i am....only with time from the last wink increasing....its difficult to control what nonsense u speak and do :)

so here are the links to the "movie" we made.... all of 12 minutes... but took tonnes n tonnes of effort ( man hours are probably about 300-500 !! )......

Shiva- Born again : part 1, part 2
the good? we started understanding what it takes to make a full length movie...
the bad? we now watch every movie with such a critical view.... start seeing how, where the cameras are....the lighting for the scene....the way the actor performed and emoted for that scene...how relevant the scene is to the movie...how the dialogues sound dry or too senti.... in the process....we stop seeing the big picture......
when u watch a nice movie, its supposed to consume you....take you with it.... u must start feeling it.... u must become a part of it...... but for us, thats lot more difficult now......in this attempt to understand movie making better, we started losing the entertainment quotient from it......atleast no longer the conventional way..... u know, we are no longer able to laugh when we are supposed to :)..... when me and soma watch a movie now, we laugh at something stupid that was done in the movie :) thats comedy for us now :)

movie making rocked :)

To pen my thoughts - Adi's Blog

Been ages since I last saw a hero pen. The authentic fountain ink pen that used to be a fancy of everyone of us when we were first introduced to ink pens in school. And then, how we used to getting so sentimentally attached to the single hero pen in our 'pencil' boxes..... Akhil, my officemate, revived those memories recently. He still uses those 332, 336 series. And whats best? He uses Chelpark blue ink.... Adi's all time favourite.....

Since Adi dosent maintain a blog, I thought I did bring up his article written sometime back here.

To ink my thoughts

An ironical tagline of an advertisement that reads, “Everybody loves good handwriting”, is used to promote a ball point pen that supposedly improves one’s handwriting. Preposterous I say. Back when we were schoolchildren, when we graduated from the usage of pencils to that of pens, we were advised, nay, plain ordered by teachers, parents, elder siblings and the like to strictly use nothing but a fountain/ink pen. The use of a ball pen was frowned upon; the argument being, an ink pen improves one’s handwriting, and a ball pen does the right opposite. We were gifted with a good ink pen (which often turned out to be the much coveted Chinese made ‘Hero’ brand of pens) by uncles or aunts or avuncular friends of father, and were encouraged to take good care of it and use it carefully for years to come; the idea being, the longer you stuck to a particular ink pen the smoother it would write. Indeed, it was a matter of pride to own a fountain pen which one had been using for many years – an object of desire for one’s classmates – and such pens were to be guarded with one’s life!

If her/his majesty, the owner of such a pen, was magnanimous enough to permit lesser mortals to write a word or two with her/his pen – which (s)he would, more often than not (albeit with an affectation of not entirely glad about the prospect), for, who at that age does not like to show off – adulatory words and ‘ooh’ and ‘aahs’ and other expressions of delight would fill the classroom! This brings me to another popular belief of that era: that as time goes by, an ink pen is moulded in accordance with the owner’s style of writing – the way (s)he grips the pen, the angle at which the nib strikes the paper, and other such criteria. This aspect is primarily what qualifies an ink pen to be a very individualistic article. Like I mentioned, a proud owner of a well used ink pen might occasionally allow his/her pals to write a word or two with it, but strictly no more. Ink pens were not lent even to the best of buddies or worst of bullies. Sometimes, a person develops an emotional bond with his/her pen that has accompanied him for many years and withstood the test(s) of time (pun intended) much like a batsman would his favourite bat with which he made all his centuries. I know of people who have written all their examinations with the same pen and would have scored considerably less had fate forced them to write with another pen.

Juxtaposing a ball pen with an ink pen vis-à-vis the points just discussed cannot be more striking in its contrast. A ball pen hardly qualifies as a gift to be cherished. It is ephemeral; today, only the most penniless poet or unabashed miser would continue to reuse a ball pen by changing its refill, till the time it breaks (no pun intended this time though!). One would scarce consider a ball pen to be one’s prized possession (mind you, we are speaking here of the common ball pens meant for everyday use and not the gold embossed, diamond studded status symbols). A ball pen is so impersonal and dispensable that it is freely lent, lost, misplaced, and thrown, without the slightest realization of its loss. True, ball pens write more smoothly than most ink pens but that is because the former are assembly line products that are all the same. On the other hand, every ink pen has a character of its own, and an ink pen earns the honor of being described as smooth. That is what makes it special.

Some people with a more utilitarian bent of mind would perhaps scoff at all this and speak about one factor that is seemingly the ball pen’s USP and the ink pen’s bane – maintenance. A ball pen of decent quality does not leak, they would point, nor does it obstinately refuse to write all of a sudden when it slips into one of its melancholic moods, and it can be thrown from one corner of a classroom to another sans the fear of an ink shower! At them, I am tempted to hit right back, quite strongly at that, by quoting an old Tamil aphorism which translates to “A donkey cannot be expected to appreciate the smell of camphor!” I could not have put more succinctly myself! The aforementioned ‘ill’ qualities of an ink pen that are ridiculed by pragmatists are the very ones that cause the romantic’s heart to spring alive! No young man or woman can claim to have a complete schooling without ever going home with their pristine white uniform splattered generously with kaleidoscopic patterns of different hues - caused variously, by practical jokes, personal vendetta, gang fights, or sheer carelessness and, needless to say - receiving a sound thrashing for the misdeed. Come to think of it, the leaky nature of ink pens simply lead to an addition to the denizens of the pencil box - the ‘ink-cloth’ that was torn by mom from some old cotton fabric.

An aside – We used to play a game inside the classroom when at school, aptly christened ‘pen fight’, which involved placing one pen each by two players on extreme ends of the table, which they took turns to strike with their fingers, the same way one would a carom board striker, with the sole objective of knocking the opponent’s pen out of the table. The game was played mainly using pencils or ball pens but certainly not ink pens partly out of respect, but more for the practical reason that all that knocking about would result in an ink bath when the pen was opened after the game!

I go back to the fond memories of how my brother taught me to take good care of my ink pens. Of how he insisted during the annual summer vacation that I take apart my fountain pen (much like Mr. Bond would have his Browning, I used to fancy) and leave it in a bowl of water for a day and place it to dry in the open verandah the next afternoon so as to get rid of persistent problems caused by old, dry ink (the ink pen’s own version of annual spa and tan; can you name one ball pen that has had this privilege?). Of how he taught me to point the pen upside down, nib aimed inside the ink bottle, while screwing close the last few turns of the pen after filling it, to ensure that any extra ink does not spill out of the tank and at the same time aiding the pen in its ink flow. Of how he preferred the uncommon ‘Chelpark’ brand of ink over that of the more common and popular ‘Bril’ , and how I aped him in this aspect thus believing that my written words had a classy touch of subtle blue and not the gross dark blue of ‘Bril’ that I looked down upon!

Pray, these words of mine are not meant to stultify or demean the ball pen clan. They are meant only to reminisce about and share with the reader, my feelings toward the ink pen, and connect with my brethren; old timers like me who lament over the fast growing popularity of ball/gell pens at the expense of their more graceful and elegant predecessors who are fast reaching extinction. I concede, however, that this indignation of mine is probably due to my inability to accept the changes that the tides of time bring, and that users of quill pens would have felt much the same way when the ink pen made its debut!

Take on wars

What is about war? What is it that triggers millions of soldiers lose their lives fighting? What is it about the power of one man to bring a nation to war with another? All these have been cliched questions oft discussed, but never answered satisfactorly to ever since time unknown......

The questions seem to find increasing relevance again, in such a war torn world today. More so in the American context. Since the end of the "great" war, by the end of late 40s, the wars that America has been engaging its soldiers in, has been very different from the conventional reasons that history has known. While its true that every time troops are mobilized to some distant land far from the political boundaries defining this country, threat to national security is cited, its difficult to believe that thousands of fully trained soldiers lose their lives fighting what is actually somebody else's war.Take vietnam, afganisthan(the one that created taliban first), somalia, gulf war 1 then and 2 now.... In all these cases, troops are engaged into mind numbing battles based on the whims and fancies of one individual......

Take an Indian soldier for instance(we are discussing india here, only because thats the only army from a democratically controlled country that I know a little about). The battles that he fights are those where he sees a direct threat to his own country. Its easier to put a group of soldiers into combat, when they are convinced into believing that their motherland is under foreign attack. Further, an Indian soldier is almost always within or at the political boundaries of his country. I do agree that some army units are engaged in UN peace keeping efforts elsewhere, but we are not talking about them here. In case of US, however, the story is different. There has been no attack on the mainland since its formation. Of course, 9/11 did happen, but that is only a single isolated incident by a terrorist who got extremely lucky with his plan.

But the point of the matter is that, how is it that the American policy makers, convince an ordinary soldier into fighting in foreign lands, to sort out someone else's problems? Take the Somalia issue for example.Or even the Vietnam war. America politburo, in each case, see a particular man getting powerful. And this power was orienting towards the other end of the then bi-polar world. So, they try to take rise internal disturbances, and offer military support to restore normalcy (at least this is how its widely perceived in the world, the truth of the matter would however be always under contention). While it maybe possible that military generals are fully aware of the real intentions of sending troops to such war torn places, what about the soldier on the battleground? Wouldnt he be ever wondering who the real enemy is? Under such circumstances, would the soldier consider it respectable to die in such a battle (which in normal circumstances is a moment of glory for him?)

It is interesting to wonder, that in every conflict the US offers support or tries to intervene, what would have happened if it never did, in the first place? Every time, the only answer is that the intervention was necessary to prevent further damage. But, did the damage really stop? Or did it only get worse? Applying the laws of thermodynamics, any system would always tend towards a region of minimum internal energy when left to itself(it may take time, but it is bound to return to a "good" state). An external force would only push it further away from this region. Military support, I believe is just this. In any case, military action can only make matters worse.

It is also interesting to see where the two largest democracies now stand in terms of military might they exert over their regions of political clout. While on one hand, we have had crazy people taking up presidencies (and then subsequently plunging their troops into wars that were not their own), on the other, it has always been an extremely dormant and weak government unable to plug the continuous acts of violence that the country it rules, was being subjected to. Both have their drawbacks. And both need to learn lessons from each other. India, should learn to take strong decisions when the situation calls for. US, for its own good, should stop thrusting so much power on a single individual.

'Left' Out

It has always been this way... Being left hander was never a direct advantage. Never. In school, in college, at work..... Every computer lab,I had a favourite spot... I prefer using one terminal as I could change the mouse orientation.... but when someone decides to take my seat, hes psyched... everything works on the reverse for him/me! Why cant people accept the fact that there do exist left handers... and its normal to be so.... everytime I pick a pen to write... people go " oh.... u r a leftie!!!" ......so??! why does there have to be an exclamation... a comment.... an expression of sneer, mock, shock, surprise(based on how good the friend turns out to be) for something as trivial as to what hand you use...!

On the 13th of August, is the WORLD LEFT HANDERS DAY..... i dont believe in celebrating days.... frindship day... valentines day... mothers day... fathers day..... man.... theres a day for everything... n i dont believe in either of them...... do u really need a day to celebrate something like friendship, love, mom and dad!! LEFT HANDERS DAY... so now the world of right, decide to celebrate us, ppl of the world of left, a day in a year!
I liked this song..... so for all the left handers who have been through everything that i did.. n do..... heres one....!

Left-Handers Lament by Ian Radburn

Now here's the story of my life,
I've had fun but lots of strife,
For I was born left-handed, but I'm proud
To be one of the elite, right-handers we can beat
We're the 10% that stand out from the crowd!

But as a little lad, oh the problems that I had
Winding clockwork toys was just a mystery
Tying laces was a pain, couldn't get it in my brain
Everything was back-to-front it seemed to me

Chorus
We're the Cack-Handed Kings, we're the LEFTIES
You right-handers just haven't got a clue
'Cos if you'd been through what we've been through
Then maybe you would feel superior too!

At 5 I started school where I was treated like a fool
Being left-handed I stood out from the pack
And learning how to write was not a struggle - more a fight
For I had my left hand tied behind my back

"Now get it in your head" the sympathetic teacher said
"You use the right and not the Devil's side"
Those supposed men of vision caused me pain and such derision
Is it any wonder often times I cried?

We're the Gibble Fisted Friends, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Time then came when my voice dropped
And my face was one big spot
But I was glad to see my teenage years arrive,
Because I use my left, I was different from the rest
And the girls saw me as something of a prize!

I learned some handy tricks in the back row of the flicks
It used to drive my girlfriends all berserk
For their eyes would keep apace of my right hand - just in case
And they never saw my left one go to work!

We're the Southpawed Princes, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Well I'm married now, worst luck
But my wife has given up
Asking me to help with chores like peeling spuds,
Or trying to cut the bread, I'll get a 4 x 2" wedge
Lose three fingertips and half a pint of blood

I would love to be a dad, but we've hit a little snag
If you can help please tell us what to do
The problem simply said, is that I'm a left-hand thread
But my wife you see, now she's a right-hand .....OH, YES WE'RE THE

Scrummy-Handed Heroes, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Now we reach today, where you stand and watch me play
And yes, I play right-handed it is true
For the very simple fact is that I've had to adapt
Something all we southpaws have to try and do

We have trouble tying ties, writing cheques out, using knives
and scissors made for use in your right hand
And when it comes to sport once again we are left short
In hockey and in polo we are banned

We're the Cuddy Wifter Winners, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Now I've finished off my song and as you move along
Please bear in mind the things I've had to say
And please show some respect for your friends who use the left
Thanks for listening to me this Left-Handers Day.

Mind Without Fear

I just loved this poem..... Usually i dont read poetry... but this one... was just brilliant.....

Mind Without Fear

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up

into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason

has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action---

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

Cordless? Strings Attached !!

Please use left ear while using cell (mobile), because if you use the right one it will affect brain directly. This is a true fact from Apollo medical team. Please forward to all your well wishers

My roomie, Hari, had forwarded this article with the following mail. The mail read,

Dear Kaushik and Suhani,

I did not understand the physiology as I forgot everything....All I know is you both might remember a bit....Kaushik, I would appreciate if you can explain the logic behind this and Suhani, because of you only T-mobile is still running ....Plesae do not use cell phone this much....and Kaushik, this is a good excuse for us not to buy a cell phone. After all, we took 5 credits of physiology....we shall explain to people, the physiological reasons that stop us from buying one...Take care. Happy studies!!!

Love Hari.

Apparently, blood was out of syllabus... so we didnt have to really feel bad if we didnt know the answer! :)

But then, this got me into writing the following 'explanation' :

I still have my doubts about what is being said in the article. Because, if the damage is really being done (which is acceptable), then it should be done equally when placed on both the ears.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the specialized system of capillary endothelial cells that protects the brain from harmful substances in the blood stream, while supplying the brain with the required nutrients for proper function. Unlike peripheral capillaries that allow relatively free exchange of substance across / between cells, the BBB strictly limits transport into the brain through both physical (tight junctions) and metabolic (enzymes) barriers.
And this fellow, can be damaged by :

Hypertension (high blood pressure): high blood pressure opens the BBB
Development: the BBB is not fully formed at birth.
Hyperosmolitity: a high concentration of a substance in the blood can open the BBB.
Microwaves: exposure to microwaves can open the BBB.
Radiation: exposure to radiation can open the BBB.
Infection: exposure to infectious agents can open the BBB.
Trauma, Ischemia, Inflammation, Pressure: injury to the brain can open the BBB

So, this article's focus is on how microwave damages the BBB. This, instead of clearing up the question, gave raise to two more questions.

One, so how come the left ear talk is relatively safer?

From what I know, supply of blood to the brain takes place from both ends.

Second, why only mobile phones?

Considering the fact that mobile phones operate at a frequency of 880-915 MHz, and that cordless phones work at 900-2 GHz range, the damage that both make must be the same.

I mean the time that a person spends on a mobile phone, if he/she is going to spend the same time on cordless, the damage should be the same right?

Doctors, engineers, anyone with any possible explanations, please write back. Will be really happy to get these inputs.

In the mean time. get back to those corded days if you want to last till someone can come up with a research backed explanation! :)

I Herd that!

Another of the crazy thought that was roaming around in the vast vacuums of space between the 2 ears of my head! An outcome of listening too keenly to a mathematical modeling class!

Dr.Walton (a famous professor in TAMU known for his skills with tensor analysis, continuum mechanics and biological pattern formations) was explaining about pattern formations and how to model them mathematically in his class. As an example, he also mentioned that populations of species can be modeled and patterns of a population spread in a region can be estimated and quantified. To prove this, he modeled the behaviour of E.Coli bacteria and ran a simulation to show how they spread about in a particular region for a given set of conditions. He further showed, that experimentally, when the same situation was replicated, the bacteria behaved exactly the same way as was predicted in the simulations. Now since it is a bacteria, and has no mind of its own, we could "control" their behaviour and migration patterns by controlling the conditions that influence their decision.

Would the same theory hold good for humans too? Can we predict human migration patterns the same way we did for a bacteria? Not withstanding the lunacity of the thought, I shot off a mail to Dr.Walton. Surprisingly, he did bother to take time off and respond to my mail. Heres a reproduction of the mails that were exchanged.

My mail to him:

Dr.Walton,

From the past few classes, where you have been teaching pattern
formations, I gain an impression that we can actually formulate
mathematical equations that can predict the migration of populations of
species across a geographical space. So, this also means, we can
"predict" human migration patterns? Why then, do the big cities get
choked up, saturated with this rush of people from the smaller
settlements?

My point is, if there are models that can be built which identify and
show a likely route that population of humans are going to take over the
future, can't the planners, use this, and try and negate the effect? Or
are the city planners already using these systems to build the cities of
future?

Kaushik

For which he said:

Kaushik,

Your impressions are quite correct. These and many other
mathematical models are being applied to modeling human migration
patterns, in general, and to the design and evolution of urban
population distribution patterns in particular.

J. Walton

:) So humans are indeed treated as herds! Imagine this. A capitalist decides to use this model to his advantage. He buys land for cheap in a god forsaken place, and then plugs in values into the model that can shoot up human migration towards this area. What would happen? Unimaginable profit margins? In short, the population is being herded around?

Now for another dimension. Imagine the government uses this model to predict and plan the population rise in a particular region. And it sees that a particular area which is not so developed now, is going to be a commercial hub in the years to come. That is if the social patterns are left to themselves. Now, if it decides to publish these results and let people know, what would happen? Wouldnt there be an exponential rise, what with everyone trying to move to the "to be" happening place? For instance, if the model predicts a linear dependance of the population rise and real estate value on a particular factor, suddenly with this announcement, wouldnt there be a quadratic or exponential dependance stepping in? In short, the very equations that were used to model a particular trend are getting altered because of the equations itself?!!!

In a quest to quantify everything known and unknown, in an attempt to take control of everything that governs our lives arent we entering into chaos? Just another scary thought. As these new revelations are made in every field of science, and with every new parameter entering into "humanly controllable" regions, isnt it possible that we are after all a part of larger schema of things already being controlled by something collosally big that is uncomprehendable by the intellectual capabilities of the human brain? And is collosal governing factor god? Or is something else? Only "time" will tell.

Nuclear deal? Whats the big deal huh?

Heres the big deal...... i was feeling so nice with the way things were going on between India n USA... what with the nuclear deal..... n the legitimity associated with india being a nuclear state n all that....
what was "actually" happening , was that i was drinking away happily what the indian media was feeding me :).... old habits die hard u see.. i still read only ndtv n rediff!

i did sometime think about how the world looks at india n tried reading some other country news sites... n whats more interesting that to read pakistani newspapers n how they portray india :) but thats a different story.....

coming to what happened today..... i chanced to read this article today... i visited this site for a totally different reason..... u see, my roomie ( n i mentioned this elsewhere, but he's almost like a role model to me now.....) soma, is now actively into dramatics.. hes the part of a play thats running successfully here in TAMU, and naturally any article about the play, about their performance, i was watching closely.....so we have this college newspaper called the BATALLION, where theres an article once in two days about how truly this play is a miss not n all that....

now its only today that observed this, but theres also a world section in the paper... n clicked it to see if the paper was covering the nuclear deal.... n naturally it did..... now comes the horror...... can u imagine this is what the article said!

amidst everything... this is what the article said:

"President Bush ushered India into the world's exclusive nuclear club Thursday with a landmark agreement to share nuclear reactors, fuel and expertise with this energy-starved nation"

if u want the complete article, here it is:
http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BUSH?SITE
=TXCOL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2006-03-02-23-05-33

!!!!! now i know i m not supposed to take a word out of the article n blow it up like this... but what the heck?!!!! this is how the US sees india? ENERGY STARVED NATION?!

n to think of it, the indian media puts it like, "US now understands that India is a formidable power to reckon with, and it cant help ignore us anymore.... yank... yank... yank....."

while it certainly might be true the way American politicians and policy makers see it that way....... the people of america are still happily fed the image of a third world india that needs all the help that america can offer.....

typical over enthu that i m , i was about to shoot off a mail to the editor complaining the article paints India in a bad light... blah... blah... blah...... n that person who wrote the article must be careful of the tone of language and all that, when i went back to see who wrote it.... n guess what? its
